Del Surjik

Director

Del was trained at the U of S (BFA, drama) and began his career in Saskatoon. He was one of the co-founders of The Saskatoon Soaps and Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, working for five years with that company as an actor, designer, production manager and Associate Director. He departed to the West Coast where he managed a national freelance career, returning to Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan for its nationally acclaimed tour of the bilingual Romeo and/et Juliette. Seven years later, after a directing gig in England, he took over Pi Theatre in Vancouver and spent a decade with that company as Artistic Director.

In Vancouver Del was a co-founder of See Seven (of which the local Live Five is a variant) and a founding member of Blackbird Theatre, among others. His directing has been featured at the Magnetic North Festival at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and his last directorial effort for Persephone Theatre was the box office hit Dogbarked (written by James O'Shea). Del's work has seen popular and critical acclaim, having been acknowledged by his peers with forty award nominations in the last two decades. He has been honoured with ten awards, culminating this past season with Vancouver's Jessie Richardson Career Achievement Award.
