Shakedown Shakespeare

Shakedown Shakespeare by Yvette Nolan

March 2 to March 27, 2009

This play is geared for students Grades 9-12

Themes: Getting to know the plays of William Shakespeare

Divider

Hamlet is widely known as one of Shakespeare's most indecisive characters and the Fool is often one of the most knowing. What happens when the two meet in the Fool's Paradise Café? A fool teaches a prince to make a choice and take action, of course… and it ends badly, as Shakespeare's tragedies always do. In this fast and funny take on four of the Bard's finest tragedies: Romeo and Juliet, King Lear, Macbeth , and Hamlet, your students will be introduced to the stories, themes and language of Shakespeare. Shakespeare can be fun and tragedy can be comedy when the world is turned upside down in the Fool's Paradise Café. Whether your students are studying Shakespeare right now, studying it in the future, or not at all, this will be the perfect opportunity to expose the whole school to the Bard.

Check back in the fall for the Shakedown Shakespeare script and study guide downloads.

New Canadian Kid

New Canadian Kid by Dennis Foon

March 2 to March 27, 2009

This play is geared for students Grades K - 8

Themes: Bullying, Racism, Immigration, Cultural Tolerance, Conflict Resolution

Easily one of Canada's best most widely produced plays for young people, this classic of Canadian theatre for youth has proved its educational worth and theatrical value time and time again across Canada and around the world in a variety of languages. Persephone Youth couldn't be happier to offer this top notch piece of theatre to your students.

Written by Dennis Foon, the author who penned other Persephone Youth Tour successes like Mirror Game, this play tells the story of Nick, a young immigrant from the invented country of "Homeland." Nick, his mother, and his father all struggle to fit into Canadian culture at school, work, and even at the grocery store. Faced with the language and cultural barriers, racism and bullying at school, these characters show us what it's like to be the outsider. Foon skillfully gives the audience a glimpse into what it must feel like for the people that we put on the outside, by having Nick's native language be presented as English, while English is presented as a made up language of gibberish. Your students will get a rare insight into the themes of bullying, racism, and immigration which are so prevalent in today's world. Don't miss out, it's going to be a great opportunity.
